Doula Services
support during pregnancy and birth

Doula services is a fun, interactive home visiting program.  The Doulas bring a wide variety of gifts and optional activities to enhance your pregnancy.  Such as comfort measures, belly casting, and making a customized birth plan to meet your needs.

The Doula program is an opportunity to make your pregnancy and birth experience the best and most memorable.  The visits start in the seventh month of pregnancy and end about two months postpartum.  The Doula program has limited number of openings, so be sure to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

What is a Doula?                  "Doula" is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other women.  The word has now come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth.

(Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, Mothering the Mother, 1993)

What services does a Doula provide? A doula's role is one of support to the parent, rather than a medical role. In addition, a doula:
  • Provides prenatal and post-partum home visits
  • Assists in establishing prenatal care
  • Helps the mother to develop a specialized birth plan
  • Provides information and support for labor and the birth process
  • Provides physical comfort measures and emotional support
  • Focuses on promoting strong parent-child relationships

Who qualifies for this FREE service?  FCHD's Doula Program is the first program of its kind in our area.  Since it is so new, Doula Services are only available to a limited number of pregnant women receiving services through the Fayette County Health Department.

What are the benefits of having
a Doula?
Research has demonstrated many benefits of doula involvement in the birth experience including:
  • Shorter labors
  • Fewer labors/delivery complications
  • Increased breastfeeding
  • Less maternal depression
  • Mothers report less pain and more satisfaction with the labor and delivery
